"Electric planes are kind of radical in the sense that for years and years, everybody's been flying gas models," said Lichtenwalner. He's been flying Air Hogs, helicopters and electric planes for more than half of his life. Contest director Aaron Lichtenwalner was inspired to launch the festival eight years ago, as electric planes started to gain in popularity and improve in quality. Taylor, 14, of Gilbert, will be among an anticipated 200 participants at the festival at Superstition Airpark, which is open to pilots of electric, radio-controlled model airplanes. "There's a whole lot of interesting people involved in it," Izard said, including his dad and grandfather, who introduced him to flying and help him tinker with repairs. Taylor said he finds the hobby at once relaxing and exciting. It's simply a free fly.
