Plus-size fashion market slowly catching on to demand

Susan Perrone, a custom dressmaker and tailor who owns Susan Perrone Couture in Oradell , said many of her customers are plus-size women looking for a better fit on something they own, or a piece made especially for them. Though the average American woman is a size 14, many stores still seem to think plus sizes don’t exist. A woman who wears a size 14 or above often had (and still has) trouble finding anything in her size. A plus-size woman no longer has to stand outside the fashion world, looking in. Now she can flatter her curves in a killer Calvin Klein dress or slip on a pair of DKNY jeans. "One of the biggest challenges facing plus-size women is being comfortable in the environment they are shopping in," said Johanna Easter, personal stylist manager at Nordstrom in Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus. Flipping through the racks would rarely reveal anything above a size 10 or 12.
